Innovative Bios is a research based biotechnology company developing a cost-effective, renewable process to extract the nutrients from animal waste to create a high value cell culture broth.  Currently, most animal waste is used as fertilizer.  However, there is always an excess of waste when compared to local on-farm needs. For example, there is an estimated 100,000 tons per year of excess poultry litter on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. This presents a problem since over-application of manure can lead eutrophication and pollution of surface waters.  Treatment of excess animal waste requires costly transportation of tons of animal waste for long distances. Current alternative uses of manure have built-in problems that need to be improved, and Innovative Bios’ technology has significant advantages over these alternatives. Due to these facts, there is an obvious need for technologies utilizing this excess animal waste. Innovative Bios plans to capitalize on that need by using its technology to create an economical and renewable cell culture broth that can be used in the biotechnology and biofuels industry.
